International Coastal Cleanup 2011
The Saugatuck River shoreline is over 277 pounds cleaner thanks to the 15 volunteers that picked up and hauled trash on September 18th. Members of SCC's Youth Group, as well as adults, participated in EarthCare/EarthShare's effort to help with a coordinated International Coastal Cleanup.
Once trash is discarded in the "wrong" place, it can stay there a very long time. The decomposition rate of debris left in our waterways is astounding: it takes a million years for a glass bottle to decompose; 450 years for a plastic bottle; 50 years for a tin can; 5 years for a wool sock; and 6 weeks for a newspaper.
