Saugatuck Youth Groups

Saugatuck High School Youth Group Off to a Great Start!

After starting the year with a pool party and barbeque, the High School Youth Group had a first meeting in which we started to plan for the year.

Before talking about our end-of-the-year mission trip, we asked ourselves a “What If” question that we found in the Westport resident Miggs Burroughs’ wonderful new book, The What If Book of Questions.

“What if the next person you meet has lost all faith in humanity? Would they feel differently if “humanity” was you?”

We asked ourselves what are the reasons people lose faith in humanity. Then we tried to look at ourselves honestly. Would someone feel the same way about us if they met us at our best or if they met us at our worst? And then we looked at the question if the ‘you’ was a plural instead of a singular. What would our youth group have to be like if, together, we would be the kind of people that would help restore someone’s faith in humanity? The words that surfaced from that discussion will form the basis of our youth group covenant that we will agree to at our next meeting.

Led by youth leaders Khaliq Sanda and Olivia Crosby and adult leaders Kim Mathias and Michael Hendricks, the Youth Group is open to all high school age young people and will meet every other week. Membership in Saugatuck Church is not required and friends are always welcome.

Our plan is to mix fellowship and service, reflection and fun. If you know of a young person who might like to be part of the Youth Group, please contact Kim Mathias

“What if?”

Our Youth Ministry is a vital part of our church! We seek to foster a sense of welcome and belonging where our youth can journey together, gaining a deeper understanding of the Christian faith and learning the benefits of being part of a loving faith community.

High School Youth Group

The High School Youth Group takes an annual week-long trip each summer which provides a tremendous opportunity for the youth to learn and reflect about themselves and the world they live in.

2010 Castles in the Sand

On May 15, 2010, all the youth were invited to participate in the Castles in the Sand event at Compo Beach. The event is held every year to benefit Homes with Hope. Thanks to John Walsh, Saugatuck had a lot filled with wet sand. For four hours, with different youth, children, and families pitching in, we made an awesome sea turtle with baby turtles and even yet-to-be-hatched turtle eggs. It was great fun, and a beautiful day to be on the beach.
