Renovation Update: Spring 2011

This past winter the church completed the second phase of a three phase construction project that was undertaken by the Congregation to further our mission to be a "Community of Christ, Welcoming All People."

At the heart of the project is the new "Welcome Center" which one can enter into directly from the large parking lot in the rear of the church. Members and visitors now enter into an attractive hall with direct access to an elevator or staircase that can reach any level in the church. Soon, a new informational video display will be installed to help people find the location of meetings and events within the church.

The new elevator and staircase provide easy access to all levels of the church.

Inside the church many of the classrooms have been completely renovated with new lighting, ceilings, windows, counter tops and storage areas as well as "Nora" rubber flooring. The new rubber flooring is extremely durable, great for kids and eco-friendly. All the rooms have been painted in bright, cheerful colors.

Our church has a long history of making itself available to the community for outreach programs such as 12 Step Meetings as well as for other community groups' use. There are 2 larger rooms available for meetings, on on the first floor and one on the second. Both of these rooms have state-of-the-art partitions, simple to operate, making for more flexible meeting spaces.

The Next Phase

Fundraising for our current capital projects began in 2008 resulting in a pledged total of $1.9 million. With the recent economic uncertainties, the Congregation decided to only spend money once it was actually in the bank. So far we have spent $1.3 million on the renovation. We have several hundred thousand in cash available and a good number of pledges that we expect to receive in the near future.

In Phase III of our building plan, which is estimated to cost $600,000 we plan to:

  • Renovate the 2 remaining classrooms on the 2nd floor
  • Renovate the 2nd floor bathroom and provide a kitchenette for the groups that meet at our church
  • Renovate the staff offices on the 1st floor
  • Provide a bathroom and a kitchenette for the use of the staff
  • Renovate and bring up to code the stairwell by the Memorial Garden

The Congregation will be meeting in early May to review the pledges that have come in and decide how to proceed.

Thanks to all those who have donated their time and resources to get us to where we are…and to all those who will keep working and giving to us to help us reach or final goal!!!
